In order to obtain a drivers license you will need to pass a behind the wheel test and prove that you're not a dangerous driver, but instead a safe and responsible driver. During testing you'll need to demonstrate a firm understanding of road signs and traffic signals; adhere to all pedestrian right-of-way situations; successfully negotiate right- and left-hand turns in intersections; and show your prowess in three-point parking.

Driving skills can only be obtained by experience. And the best way to get experience is by enrolling in a driver training class, or what is commonly known as drivers ed. These courses combine classroom training with on-road experience, teaching everything you'll need to know to pass a skills test and, ultimately, become a safe driver. On-road training usually involves you, the instructor, and depending on the size of your class, maybe one or two other students. You'll receive detailed instruction on every facet of driving, including highway skills, passing on two-lane roads and parking.

Classes are readily available throughout every state. Most high schools and some colleges offer classes regularly. There are also many third-party driver ed schools. But before enrolling, make sure the school or class is state-approved. You can find this out by contacting your local DMV office.

After completing a class you'll be ready for your road test. In the days leading up to your skills test, don't hesitate to practice driving with a licensed driver.
