If you are over 18 and ready to apply for your first Georgia drivers license, you're in luck! While the state has many rules that apply to drivers under the age of 18, adult drivers have a relatively easy time getting their first license.

Document Requirements

While adult drivers do not need to apply for a learners permit or complete driver education classes, they do need to present the same identification documents as first-time teen drivers. This includes:

• Proof of identity and legal presence in the United States, such as a valid US passport or your birth certificate.
• Your Social Security number or a letter of denial if you are not eligible to have a Social Security number because of your immigration status.
• Proof of residency, such as a copy of a utility bill in your name or a check stub from a Georgia employer showing your full name and address.

All of the documents used to apply for your Georgia drivers license must be originals; no faxes or photocopies will be accepted. If your documents are not written in English, please call the nearest DDS office for assistance in locating a document translation company.

Testing Requirements

The purpose of the vision screening is simply to determine if you are able to see well enough to drive safely. You can wear your glasses or contact lenses to complete the screening, if needed.

The written exam covers road rules and road signs. Each section has 20 multiple choice questions. You need to answer at least 15 questions correctly in order to earn a passing score.

A driving test is necessary in order to receive your first Georgia drivers license. You will be evaluated on your ability to perform basic driving tasks, such as backing, turning, changing lanes, and parallel parking. You will not be asked to do anything that is illegal or unsafe during the driving test. You must provide your own properly insured vehicle to complete the test.

Georgia Drivers License Fees

The fee to receive a Class A, B, C, or M drivers license for five years is $20. A 10 year license is available for $35. There are no separate fees charged for the driving test or written test. Payments can be made by cash, check, credit card, or money order.
