What documents are required to obtain a new Georgia drivers license? Georgia

Before you will be allowed to complete any testing requirements to receive your Georgia drivers license, the Department of Driver of Services will ask for several different documents.

Proof of Identity

The most common documents used to prove identity are your birth certificate or an official US passport. If your name has changed from what is shown on these documents, you must provide supporting documentation such as a copy of your marriage certificate or divorce decree.

Other documents acceptable for proof of identity include an official military identification card, certified naturalization documentation, or an immigration ID card.

Proof of Residency

Acceptable proof of Georgia residency could include a bank statement, utility bill, or rental contract dated within the last 60 days. A check stub with your full name and address or a letter from your Georgia employer is also acceptable.

If you can't provide any of the above documents, you can show the Georgia drivers license of parent, child, guardian or spouse. However, the license holder must accompany you to the Department of Driver Services office.

Proof of Social Security Number

To satisfy this requirement, you must simply provide your Social Security number. The original card is not necessary, although the number will be verified by the Georgia Department of Driver Services.

If you are not eligible for a Social Security number due to alien status, you will need to present certification from the Social Security Administration (Letter of Denial, Form SSAL 676).

Proof of Citizenship or Legal Presence

You will need to provide your birth certificate, passport, or current immigration papers to satisfy this requirement for obtaining a Georgia driver license. All documents must be originals and in English. If you need assistance locating a document translator, contact the nearest GA DDS office.
