The testing requirements for obtaining a Georgia drivers license depend on several different factors.

About Drivers License Tests

The written test in Georgia is comprised of two sections: a road rules test and a road sign test. Each section has 20 questions, with 15 correct answers needed to pass. The road sign test is available in English only, but the road rules portion of the written exam can be provided in other languages upon request. No appointment is needed for the written exam, but you must begin your test at least 30 minutes before closing.

You must provide your own vehicle for the driving test and show proof that it is properly insured. The driving test includes common vehicle maneuvers such as parallel parking, quick stops, backing, passing, turning, following, and yielding right-of-way. The driving test requires a minimum score of 75% to pass. Appointments with the Georgia DDS are not required for the driving test, but are strongly recommended.

If you do not pass the written exam or the driving test on the first try, you must wait one day for the second attempt. If you fail again, you must wait at least seven days for retesting. If you fail your driving test because of an accident or a traffic violation, you must wait 30 days for retesting.

Drivers License Tests for Teen Drivers

Teen drivers who are applying for their first drivers license must complete a driver education course if they are under 17 years of age and have held a learners license for at least one year and one day from the time they complete the written test and driving test. A parent or legal guardian must also sign an affidavit stating that the teen has completed 40 hours of driving practice in addition to the driver education course.

If you are a teen driver with a learners permit or probationary license from another state, you may be required to take the written and driving tests if your state's Graduated Driver License laws are significantly different from the program in place for Georgia teen drivers. Contact the nearest Georgia Department of Driver Services office for additional information.

Drivers License Tests for Adult Drivers

First time adult drivers age 18 and older are not required to complete the Graduated Driver License program, but they will need to pass both the written exam and road tests before earning their driver license.

If you are a new Georgia resident who is over 18 and has a currently valid drivers license from another state or a license that has been expired for less than two years, you not be required to complete the written or road tests. You can simply exchange your license for a new Georgia driver license after you successfully pass the vision exam.

Practice Tests

The best way to prepare to take a drivers license test is to practice as much as possible on your own or through a driver education program. If you're planning to take the driving test, have an experienced driver supervise you to see how well you handle backing, changing lanes, parallel parking, and other common driving tasks. If you will need to take the written test, you can find practice tests in your state's driver manual or on various third party Web sites.
