The state of Georgia typically doesn’t require appointments for license transactions, but it does encourage them for faster service.

Current Georgia Residents

If you are 18 or older and have never held a Georgia driver license or permit, you are required to take both the written and driving exams. You are not required to schedule an appointment unless you need special assistance, especially for customers with reading or hearing impairments.

Appointments for the driving test are not required, but are encouraged. Road test appointments can be scheduled up to 90 days in advance. If the weather conditions make it unsafe for driving, however, the test will need to be rescheduled.

Teen Drivers

Appointments are required for all drivers under 18 years of age who wish to obtain their first license. This reservation system helps eliminate long waits and guarantees service on a specific day and time.

For the first time teen driver, the appointment lasts about 60 minutes. This time includes all paperwork, the road test, and the license issuance if the testing is successful. When calling to schedule a reservation, please have your permit number available.

New to Georgia

If you are new to Georgia and need to apply for a drivers license, you are encouraged to set up an appointment. Out-of-state transfers can be done at all GA Customer Service Stations. All knowledge testing must begin at least 30 minutes before the center closes, however.

However, out-of-state CDL transfers are not eligible for reservations. Contact a Customer Service Station for more information about how to apply for your Georgia CDL.
