Do I have to take drivers education or driver training to get a New York driver license? New York
Younger Than 18 Drivers Education
All drivers seeking a New York drivers license must enroll in a driver education program. This course must be state approved. When you apply for your driver license NY DMV officials will request a driver education certificate (form MV-285). You will need to bring this certificate to the DMV office when you take your written test and apply for a drivers permit. Be sure, before arriving, that you study for the written exam. You can do this by studying New York's drivers manual. In addition, you should also take several practice tests. These can be found online, and most are for free.
In addition, you will also need before taking the road test, to complete 50 hours of supervised driving with at least 15 hours at night. Your parent or guardian will then need to complete a Certification of Supervised Driving (form MV-262). You will need to bring this form with you when you take drivers test.
Older Than 18 Drivers Training
Enrolling in a drivers education program is optional, although recommended. Completion of a state-approved program will free you from taking the written exam.
If you opt not to participate in a driver ed course you will instead need to enroll in a pre-licensing class. This five-hour program is geared towards adults, touching on safe driving techniques and tips. For help on finding an approved course, check with the DMV.
You will need to present a pre-licensing course certificate (form MV-278) when you arrive to take your driving test.
