Written Test

You do not need to make any appointment to take the written test, the first step in obtaining a NY drivers license. However, you must arrive at least one half-hour before closing time. Or, on a day when DMV office hours are extended, you must arrive at least one hour prior to closing.

You can take the written test at any DMV office location

So as to not waste your time, be sure you're ready before taking the exam. Prepare by studying the NY driver manual, and by taking multiple practice tests.

Driving Test

You must schedule a driving test in advance. Due to heavy test volume it usually takes several weeks from the day you schedule the driver license test to the actual day of the exam.

You can make an appoint online or by calling (518) 402-2100. When you make the appointment be sure to have:

  • Your learner permit. You'll need the client number located on the permit.
  • Either your driver education certificate (form MV-285) or your pre-licensing course certificate (form MV-278). You'll need to enter the certificate number, which is printed in red.
  • Know the zip code of the location where you plan to take your New York road test.
  • Paper and pen if you use the phone to make your appointment. This way you can write down the time, date and directions to the test site.
