Drivers License Test for New Drivers

All new drivers, regardless of age, must take the written test and the driving test.

Before you can apply for the drivers license exam you will first need to pass the written test. This multiple choice exam is based on information found in the New Jersey drivers manual. You can obtain a copy from any Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) office or by downloading a copy from the MVC's Web site. After studying, be sure to take several practice tests. These can easily be found online.

When you're ready for the 50-question written test, visit any MVC office with all required documents. Only drivers under 17 must provide proof of enrolling in a driver education course. No appointment is needed.

If you pass the written test you will earn an examination permit. If you fail, you must wait an entire week before retaking the exam.

If you're younger than 21 you must hold your examination permit for six months before you can apply for a road test. Drivers 21 or older only need to hold the examination permit for three months. Once you're ready, you must make a driving test appointment online. Be sure to bring all required documents to the drivers license test exam.

If you fail, you must wait two weeks before taking the road test again. If you fail twice, the MVC (New Jersey's version of the DMV) may require a six-month wait before you'll be allowed to try again.

Drivers License Test for New Residents

You do not need to take a written test or a road test if you own a valid drivers license from another state or from the District of Columbia. Depending on which comes first, you must apply for a New Jersey driver license within 60 days of becoming a NJ resident or before your current out-of-state license expires.

Drivers License Test for Non-Citizens

To obtain a New Jersey drivers license you will need to pass a vision test, a written test, and, depending on your situation, possibly the driving test.
