Do I have to take drivers education or driver training to get a New Jersey driver license? New Jersey
Drivers Education Requirement
Driver training is only required for drivers younger than 17. When applying for a student learner's permit, the first step for obtaining a New Jersey drivers license, you must provide proof of enrollment in a driver education program. This school or course must be state approved. But this, of course, does not guarantee receiving a student learner's permit. In addition, you must also pass a vision test and a 50-question written test. To prepare for the written test, study the states drivers manual. This can be obtained, for free, from any DMV office (or MVC office as it's known as in NJ) or by downloading a copy from the MVC's Web site.
After studying the manual, you'll next want to take several practice tests. These exams, which can be found online, feature questions similar to those found on the actual test. The questions are written in multiple-choice form and are based on all topics – road sign recognition, parking, vehicle spacing – covered in the manual.
Driver Training Option
Though drivers education is not mandated for drivers 17 or older, it's an option that should still be considered. Not only does the course provide good training for passing the state's drivers test, which is necessary for obtaining a driver license, but it also teaches defensive tips and techniques.Plus, depending on your insurance provider, enrollment in a driver education program may earn you a discount on your insurance rate.
