Pennsylvania requires all drivers license applicants to first obtain a Class C learner’s permit, the fee for which is $5.
Once you’re ready to take your driving test, you’ll make an appointment with PennDOT and pay the fee for the full PA Class C driver license, which varies by age:
Pennsylvania doesn’t require drivers license applicants to take drivers education (although the state does require 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice time before an applicant can apply for the full drivers license).
If you don’t plan to take drivers ed, you can prepare for both your written and your driving test by studying the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual and taking a few practice tests. If you access the manual online, you’ll even get extra study questions.
