Do I have to take drivers education or driver training to get a Massachusetts driver license? Massachusetts
That depends on how old you are; see below for details.
Before you apply for your drivers license, you must obtain a minimum of 40 hours of training with your parent or guardian. Or, 30 hours if you finished a drivers skill development program.
No matter what group you belong to, it's a good idea to take several practice tests to prepare you for the written exam. Doing so will help you determine how ready you are for the official RMV test, and what areas you might need to study in greater detail.
MA Residents Younger Than 18 Years Old
You'll have to complete a state-approved drivers education/drivers training course. In this class, you must compile at least:- 30 hours of classroom instruction
- 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training
- Six hours of back-seat drivers training observation

While formal driver education and training aren't required for you, it's still recommended.
