How do I complete a CA drivers license renewal online? California

New Driver Checklist

Online Renewal Eligibility

To renew a drivers license online, you must meet these criteria:

  • Have your renewal notice, which has a Renewal Identification Number (RIN) you’ll be asked for. If you've lost this notice, you may NOT renew online.
  • Your current address must be on file with the DMV and your personal description must be the same. So if you gained or lost a lot of weight, you would need to appear in person.
  • Have a verified Social Security number on record with the DMV. The CA DMV began verifying numbers in 2000.
  • Use of the Internet and a valid credit card. The California DMV takes all major credit cards, including American Express and Discover.

Online Driver License Renewal Process

  • Look at your renewal notice for the Web site address.
  • Log in following the CA DMV instructions, inputting your RIN.

Expired License

You may still renew by Internet if your drivers license is expired.

  • There’s no penalty at the DMV for having an expired license. You will get a ticket, however, if you get pulled over driving on an expired drivers license.
  • If you are not eligible to renew, the Internet system will prompt you to come into a DMV office.

Lost or Stolen License

You may not renew or replace a lost or stolen license online.

Traffic Ticket

If you have a traffic ticket on file, depending on the standing of your license, you can still renew online if you meet the other criteria and if your license is not suspended.

The system will tell you if you may proceed with the renewal.
