The TX renew license fee depends on your age and is actually the same as the fee you paid for your original drivers license in most cases.

If you’re:

  • Younger than 18, you’ll pay $5 and your license will expire on your next birthday.
  • 18 or older, you’ll pay $24 and your license will expire in six years.
  • 85 or older, you’ll pay $8 and your license will expire two years from expiration prior to renewal.
Keep in mind that:

  • Motorcycle endorsements cost an extra $8.
  • If you renew online or by phone, you’ll pay an extra $1 convenience fee.

Renewing an Expired License

If your license is already expired, typically the Texas DPS will allow you to renew it normally as long as it hasn’t been expired for longer than two years. If you’re past the two-year mark, you’ll have to start the entire licensing process over again.

Still, it’s best to renew your drivers license as soon as possible to avoid all the penalties associated with driving on an expired license (such as a traffic ticket, a court appearance, and a fine).

To make it easier to remember, the TX DPS will send you a license renewal notice approximately six weeks before your driver license is set to expire. Your renewal notice will tell you whether you should renew in person, by mail, or by phone and most likely remind you of your license renewal fee.
