Are the steps for renewing a TX permit the same as drivers license renewal? Texas
Yes and no.
Yes, because you’ll renew your learners permit in person at your nearest Texas DPS location, and when you do you’ll follow the same steps as a driver who’s renewing his full drivers license. Of course, there are a few differences. For example, you’ll have to show your school attendance and enrollment forms as well as pay a different renewal fee: $5.
No, because the DPS generally doesn’t allow a driver to use any of the other renew license options (online, by phone, by mail) to renew a drivers permit.
NOTE: If you’re out of state and your permit is scheduled to expire soon, you can contact the DPS at (512) 424-2600 to ask about renewing by mail. It’s not likely you’ll be allowed to, but it’s worth a shot.
Unfortunately, the DPS doesn’t send renewal notices when it’s time to renew a permit; each permit holder will have to keep up with that himself.
To help yourself do so, check the expiration date on your permit, and keep in mind that:

Keep Up With Your Permit Renewal
When it’s time to renew a driver license, the TX DPS sends out license renewal notices. This is convenient as it helps each driver avoid cruising around with an expired license.Unfortunately, the DPS doesn’t send renewal notices when it’s time to renew a permit; each permit holder will have to keep up with that himself.
To help yourself do so, check the expiration date on your permit, and keep in mind that:
- Your initial learners permit is designed to stay valid for at least six months – the time period you’re required to hold it before you can apply for your provisional license at 16.
- When you receive your provisional license, it will read “TRC 545.424 applies until MM DD YY.” This is the date you can swap the provisional for the full license.
