You must have a valid Georgia drivers license in order to legally operate your motor vehicle. If you are caught driving with an expired license, you could face a traffic ticket and a fine of up to $1,000. In addition, drivers who let their licenses expire for more than two years will need to retake the written exam and driving test upon renewal. Therefore, it's in your best interest to take care of your drivers license renewal as soon as possible.
The fee for renewing a Georgia drivers license is the same as the fee for applying for your first drivers license. The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) issues five year licenses for $20 or 10 year licenses for $35. If you are a veteran eligible for an honorary Georgia license, there is no fee.
If you are not allowed to drive due to a suspended license or a medical condition that would make operating a motor vehicle unsafe, you can request a Georgia identification card instead of a drivers license. The cards are valid for five years for $20 or 10 years for $35.
Drivers License Discounts and Payment Information
There is a $5 discount if you choose to renew your Georgia drivers license by mail or online. There is no discount available for identification card renewals, however.
If you visit a GA DDS Customer Service Center, you will need to pay your license renewal fees by cash, money order, check, or credit card. If you want to renew by mail or online, you'll need to have a valid credit card for payment of the renewal fee.
