While many people associate a license suspension with a DUI offense, there are actually several different ways to get your driving privileges temporarily removed. Some of the offenses that could result in a suspended license include:

• Hit and run
• Vehicular homicide
• Driving without insurance
• Accumulating too many points on your Georgia driving record
• Failure to appear in court
• Purchasing an alcoholic beverage while under the age of 21

Each reason for getting your drivers license suspended requires a different set of procedures to have your driving privileges reinstated. Most offenses require that you complete the suspension and pay a specified fine, but some have additional requirements you must meet as well. For example, a DUI offense or a suspension that was the result of possession of a controlled substance requires a certificate of completion from a DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program approved by the DDS. Persons convicted of two or more DUI offenses within a 10 year period must undergo an extensive clinical evaluation and treatment program before license reinstatement.

• Visit a Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) office that provides full reinstatements. You can search the DDS Web site for a list of Customer Service Centers that provide reinstatements.
• Call (678) 413-8400 or (866) 754-3687 Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. to speak with a DDS representative about what steps must be completed to reinstate your drivers license.
• Submit a letter with your name, license number, birth date, signature, and correct mailing address to Georgia Department of Driver Services; Box 80447; Conyers, GA 30013.
