How do I complete a NY drivers license renewal online? New York

New Driver Checklist

Decide if You're Eligible for Online License Renewal

First, determine whether you can renew your NY driver license online. You CANNOT renew online if you possess one of the following:

  • A learner permit.
  • A conditional or restricted license.
  • A driver license that requires an ignition interlock device.
  • A document that contains the words "Valid Without Photo."
  • A regular driver license that you want converted into an Enhanced Driver License (EDL).
In addition, you cannot use the online renewal option if:

  • Your current New York drivers license is suspended or revoked.
  • Your driver license expires more than one year from today.
  • Your driver license expired more than two years ago.
  • You live in another country.
  • You want to eliminate a restriction for corrective lenses or a hearing aid from your driver license.
  • Your Eye Test Report (either form MV-619 or form MV-619R) was completed by an eye specialist outside of the United States.
  • You are required to wear telescopic lenses.
If you qualify, be sure the mailing address the DMV has on file for you is current. The DMV will only send your renewed license to the address it has on file. You cannot change your address during the transaction process. If your address has changed, be sure to take the necessary steps to alert the DMV before submitting your online renewal form.

How to Renew License Online

You will need the following:

  • Your Client ID Number. This nine-digit number can be found on your driver license.
  • Either form MV-619 or form MV-619R. You will need to enter information found on this form.
  • A valid e-mail address for receiving confirmation the transaction went through.
  • Either pen and paper or a working printer to record your confirmation number.
  • One of the following credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover Card.
Be sure your browser permits cookies.

After submitting, your renewed NY driver license should arrive in the mail within two weeks. If it does not arrive within this timeframe, contact the DMV.

Be Sure to Renew On Time

Do not operate a vehicle with an expired drivers license. In most instances, if stopped, you'll be issued a traffic ticket.
