Are the steps for renewing a NY permit the same as drivers license renewal? New York

New Driver Checklist

New York Permit Renewal

You must first determine if your learners permit can be renewed. You can only renew if you passed the state's written test within the last two years. If not, you'll need to start all over. You must visit any DMV office and pass a new vision test and a new written test.

If you are eligible, you can renew no more than 30 days prior to your permit's expiration date or, as explained above, no more than two years after passing the written exam.

You have two renewal options:
  • Mail
  • In-person at any DMV office
This differs from renewing a drivers license in that you do not have the online option. And plus, unlike owning a driver license where you receive a renew license notice in the mail, you will not receive a renew permit notice, alerting you of an approaching expiration date.

How to Renew a Learners Permit

Just like a license renewal you will need to submit the following:

  • A NY drivers license/permit application (form MV-44).
  • A Vision Eye Report (form MV-619). If you renew in-person, you can, instead of providing this form, take a vision test at the DMV office.
  • Cash (in-person only), check or credit card to pay $64.50 fee.
