Request Renewal by Mail

North Carolina only allows certain cases to renew a drivers license through the mail. This is because NC always requires a vision and written test at every renewal. You may make the renew by mail request if:

  • You are in the military stationed outside of NC or deployed when your drivers license expired.
  • You’ve temporarily moved out of state for 30 or more days.

Fill out the NC DMV’s online request form, or call 919-715-7000 and explain your situation.

You are allowed to renew a license up to 60 days before it expires. If making a special request, you should try to do it as early as possible before the license expires.

Expired License

Letting a drivers license expire will result in you getting a traffic ticket, should you ever be pulled over. However, you won’t have to jump through any extra hoops while renewing, unless it's been more than one year. In that case, you must apply for a new drivers license.

Renewing a License

The procedure to renew a drivers license is as follows:

  • Make an appointment at a DMV office. Allow time to take the written and vision tests.
  • Bring along your old license, proof of insurance, and Social Security card (unless you know the DMV has it on file).
  • Pay the fee of $4 per year. Those ages 18 to 53 get to keep their drivers licenses for 8 years; 54 and up for 5 years.
  • If the examiner decides you look like you need to retake the driving test, you’ll find yourself demonstrating your skills behind the wheel of your vehicle. Be sure to brush up on these skills as well prior to renewal.
