Are the steps for renewing a NJ permit the same as drivers license renewal? New Jersey

New Driver Checklist

Renew License and Learners Permit

There are some similarities. Yes, you must renew a drivers permit in-person at a DMV office (or MVC as it's known in New Jersey), just as if you were renewing a drivers license. But to renew an examination permit (for drivers 17 and older) you must also re-take the vision and written tests. You do not have to do this when renewing a driver license, unless it has been expired for more than three years. And plus, the fees are different. A permit fee is $10, whereas a license renewal fee is either $24 or $33, depending on whether your license is four years or six years.

How you renew your learners permit depends on your age.

Renewing a Student Permit if You're Under 17

  • Contact your driving school instructor.
  • Pay the $10 permit fee.

Renewing an Examination Permit if 17 or Older

Visit any MVC office with the following:

  • Enough documents to meet 6 Point Identification Verification requirements.
  • Your expired permit.
  • Cash, check or credit card to pay $10 permit fee.

You will also, while there, be required to pass the vision and written tests again.

Expired License or Expired Permit Penalties

Don't get behind the wheel of a car if your drivers license or learners permit is expired. In most cases, if stopped, you'll be issued a traffic ticket and fined. And as a beginner driver with a permit, it could delay your goal towards obtaining a NJ drivers license.
