How long before I am eligible for a New Jersey drivers license reinstatement if I have a suspended license? New Jersey

New Driver Checklist

New Jersey Suspended License/Revoke License

Each suspension varies; each is treated on a case-by-case basis. Some suspensions are automatic. Others are determined by the courts or the Chief Administrator of the MVC.

Many factors are involved when determining a suspension's length. These include the nature of the infraction and whether or not you are a repeat offender. For instance, a first time DUI with a blood alcohol count (BAC) between .08  and .10 results in a suspension ranging from seven to 10 months.  A second offense within 10 years of the first DUI will result in a two-year suspension. If an accident is involved, or if children were in the vehicle at the time of arrest, the suspension could be even longer.

NJ License Reinstatement

When your suspension period ends, you will receive a Notice of Restoration in the mail. This gives you the okay to restore your drivers license. The process is similar to a driver license renewal only that you must pay a $100 restoration fee. You can do this online, in-person or by mail. After paying the fee, you then must visit any NJ MVC office and:

  • Provide identification to meet 6 Point Identification Verification requirements.
  • Pay a $24 license renewal fee with cash, check, money order or credit card (Visa, American Express, MasterCard).
