Can I complete a MA drivers license renewal online? Massachusetts

You might be able to complete an online license renewal - but there are some restrictions. See below for more information.

MA Renew License Online Restrictions

You can only renew your driver license online once every 10 years, which works out to every other renewal as licenses are valid for five years.

You can't use this option, however, if you:

  • Need to change your name
  • Don't have a Social Security number
  • Want to update your organ donor preference
  • Have a license picture that occurred before your 21st birthday
  • Have a license picture that's more than nine years old
  • Want to register to vote
  • Haven't received your confirmation from your online change of address
You should receive your new drivers license in about a week, and you can pay for it with your Visa, MasterCard, or Discover Card.

Other Important Drivers License Renewal Information

You don't have to wait to the last minute to renew your license; in fact, you can do it up to a year in advance. The renewal fee is $75 for the five-year license.

Just make sure you don't drive with an expired license, as you risk getting nailed with a traffic ticket and a hefty fine.
