Chauffeur Driver License Requirements by State
Many states require a CDL, a special drivers license, or a special driver license endorsement before a driver can legally operate a limousine.Some states even require a CDL with an additional passenger endorsement.
Check your state in the grid below. If it’s marked “Yes,” you’ll need to obtain some sort of special license or endorsement before you can become a chauffeur. Give your local DMV branch a call to find out specifics and, while you’re on the phone, ask about:
- Age, medical, and background check requirements.
- The kind of knowledge test you’ll have to take. Will it be the CDL test or one that looks more like a regular drivers license test? (Remember, you can prepare for this exam by taking a practice test or two.)
- The kind of driving test you’ll have to take. Will you have to provide your own vehicle?
