Can I take my drivers license test in German?

New Driver Checklist

German Driver License Tests by State

As of July 2010, only 11 of the 50 U.S. states offer a drivers license test in German. Consult the grid below to see your state is one of these 11 states, and be sure to speak with someone at your local DMV office to double-check.

Keep in mind, though, that even in states that offer a drivers license test in German, the road sign portion of the test is likely to be in English. Because signs on the road are written in English only, in the majority of areas, at least basic knowledge of the English language is required of all drivers.

Take a Practice Test and Driver Training

Before you make an appointment for your drivers license, consider searching for practice tests (and taking one or two) written in German. A variety of independent drivers education companies provide these tests, and it usually only takes a few minutes of searching the Internet to find one.

If you are interested in taking a drivers education course, you can do so with the aid of an English-German interpreter.
