Sleep Apnea and Your Driver License
Each state treats sleep disorder differently, often on a case-by-case basis. Some states require physicians, by law, to report client disorders (such as epilepsy, sleep apnea, and strokes) to the DMV. Other states only take action following an episode which, in this situation, would entail sleeping behind the wheel.
Driver License Suspended?
Based on the recommendation of your state's Medical Advisory Board, you may have your drivers license suspended. This may be immediate, or only after you agreed to further medical evaluation. If your license is suspended, most states will allow for an appeal or a hearing to plead your case. Your suspension may be lifted if you and your physician can prove to the DMV that your sleep symptoms have been cured by medication and/or pose no danger when you're driving.
Or, instead of a suspended license, you may be issued a restricted drivers license, limiting you to maybe driving only during daylight hours, or within a certain area around your home.
