Vehicle Registration Renewal

Each year, at least 60 days before your car registration is due, the DMV sends out a notice telling you that it’s almost time to renew your car registration.

This notice will also tell you:
  • An online Renewal Identification Number (RIN), if you’re eligible to renew online.
  • Whether you need a smog check.
Generally, an inspection is not required for renewals; just for initial vehicle registration.

If you don’t have your current address filed with the DMV, be aware the notice will go to your old address. If you don’t get the renewal notice, contact the DMV.

Online Registration

Only those with a RIN may do a DMV registration online. To register car this way, you’ll need to have a smog certificate and insurance filed with the California DMV.

To renew online, go to the DMV’s online renewal link. Make sure you:
  • Have your RIN handy.
  • Have an e-Check (a blank check, to get the proper info); a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express card; or a debit card with a Star, Pulse, Accel, or NYCE symbol on it.
  • Have a fairly current browser; if you have Netscape 4 or earlier, it won’t print the confirmation page.

Mail Renewal

To renew your registration by mail:

  • Get emissions testing, if required.
  • Write a check or money order for the amount requested on the renewal notice.
Mail it in the envelope provided to:

Department of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 942869
Sacramento, CA 94269-0001

In-Person DMV Registration Renewal

If you want to renew your registration in person:

  • Schedule an appointment using the online automated system, or by calling a local DMV.
  • Get an emissions or smog check, if required on the car registration renewal notice.
  • Bring your proof of insurance in, unless you know that your insurance company uses electronic reporting directly to the DMV.
  • Bring a debit card, cash, check or money order (the renewal notice will tell you the correct amount). The DMV doesn’t have credit card machines in its offices.
