Where to Get a Smog Check in CA

The California Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Automotive Repairs, has a list of emissions testing inspection centers on its Web site. You may also simply look in your paper or online yellow pages for a local listing.

Remember that, to avoid conflict of interest, the same mechanic who does a smog check may not also do the repairs.

The smog check station will give you a certificate for DMV registration, but if the car fails the emissions inspection, you must take it to another mechanic for repairs before you can complete a vehicle registration or registration renewal.

NOTE: Some older cars cannot be repaired; the CA DMV has special programs to help get these cars off the road.

Smog Before Car Registration

Get a smog check done before you get a DMV registration. If you don’t, you can still pay all the car registration fees, but you cannot register car. Once you show the smog certificate, you will be sent your registration stickers.
