Vehicle Registration Duplicates

To replace the car registration:
  • Complete the Application for Replacement Plates, Stickers, Documents (REG 156) . You can get it from either the CA DMV Web site or a DMV office.
  • Have a check or money order ready to pay the $18 duplicate California registration fee.
You may either bring the form and money into a DMV office (make an appointment) or mail it to:

Department of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 942869
Sacramento, CA 94269-0001

Register Car on Time

If your vehicle registration is close to expiration, make sure to complete the DMV registration before it’s due. California begins assessing late fees for a car registration on the first day it's late, and the fees keep climbing up.
