Online Car Register Renewal

Yes, New York allows you to renew your vehicle registration online. It is one of four registration renewal options in addition to registering by phone, mail, and in person at any NY DMV office.

Depending on your situation, you can renew online only if:
  • You changed your address and notified the DMV. Otherwise, the DMV will send your new car registration certificate to your old address.
  • Your current registered vehicle is a passenger vehicle, a small commercial vehicle, a small trailer, or a motorcycle that you did not remove from the road.
Don't use this option if your registration is within several days of expiring. Processing takes about two weeks, putting you at risk of driving with an expired registration certificate while waiting for your new one to arrive in the mail. To receive your new car registration immediately, renew in person at any DMV office.

Online DMV Registration Requirements

You should receive a register car renewal notice in the mail, approximately 45 to 60 days before your registration's expiration date. Keep this filed in a safe place. You'll need it during the online renewal process.

To renew online, you'll need the following:
  • Your license plate number.
  • Your registration class code. This can be found on your registration renewal notice or your current registration certificate.
  • A valid e-mail address.
  • A valid credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express) to pay the registration renewal fee. This fee is listed on your renewal notice or will be posted on the computer when you begin the online renewal process.
Your new DMV registration certificate should arrive in the mail within about two weeks.

Inspection and Emissions Testing

Though not asked to provide proof when renewing your registration online, you will be required to have your vehicle inspected and to pass a smog check. The annual inspection is required as a safety measure. While an emissions exam is necessary for helping curb smog conditions throughout the state.
