New York Register Car and Vehicle Inspection

New York requires every vehicle owner to have his or her vehicle pass an annual safety inspection and a smog check (also known as emissions testing).

You do not need, however, to provide proof of this during vehicle registration. Proof comes from the New York Inspection Stations that send emissions test results to the DMV. If the DMV does not have your vehicle on record for passing an emissions inspection, you will not be allowed to apply for registration renewal.

In addition, by not having your vehicle inspected for smog or safety, you'll also risk being ticketed or fined by the police. All vehicles must display an inspection and emissions sticker. If your vehicle lacks this sticker, or the sticker has expired, you'll be hit with the following fines:
  • Expired for fewer than 60 days: $25 to $50.
  • Expired for 60 days or more: $50 to $100.
  • No inspection sticker: $50-$100 and a $55 surcharge.
Also, if your car is legally parked but lacks an inspection sticker, or one that's valid, you could still be issued a parking ticket.

Emissions Testing Locations

You must have your vehicle inspected at an official DMV inspection station. These can be found throughout the state. Both inspections will be conducted during the same visit. Be sure to bring cash, check, or credit card to pay the following fees:
  • Safety inspection: $10
  • Emissions: $27 for New York metropolitan residents and $11 for all others

Different Inspection Scenarios

Buy From a Dealer

If you buy the vehicle from a New York dealership, the dealer must provide inspections no more than 30 days before the vehicle is delivered to you.

Buy the Vehicle Out-of-State

If you buy the vehicle out-of-state, you will receive an inspection extension during car registration. You'll then have 10 days after completing a NY registration to meet the state's inspection and smog test regulations.

New Resident With Valid Inspection From Another State

If you just moved to New York and your vehicle was inspected in another state, the DMV will not require you to submit to another inspection; at least, not yet. This inspection will remain valid until it expires, or for one year after the vehicle's NY DMV registration date, whichever comes first.
