What are the NY emissions or smog check requirements for vehicle registration? New York

Inspection Requirements to Register Car

New York mandates an annual safety inspection and smog check. To have your vehicle inspected, visit any DMV-approved inspection station. These are located throughout the state. You can find inspection station listings on the NY DMV's Web site.

Both inspections (safety and smog) will be handled at once. Have cash, check or credit card to pay the following fees:

  • Inspection - $10
  • Emissions - $11 or $27 if you live in the New York metropolitan area.
If you pass, your vehicle will be fitted with a new inspection sticker and your information will be updated on the DMV's Web site. So when it comes time for vehicle registration, you won't need to provide proof of inspection, the DMV will have your information on file. But to play it safe, in case there is any question when you attempt to renew your DMV registration, keep your emissions testing receipt on file.

Penalties for Not Complying With NY Inspection Requirements

If you fail to comply with the state's inspection requirements, you will not be allowed to renew your car registration.  In addition, you'll face the following possible fines:

  • Inspection sticker expired for 60 days or less - $25 to $50
  • Inspection sticker expired for more than 60 days - $50 to $100
  • No inspection sticker - $50 to $100
  • Parked vehicle with no inspection sticker or an expired inspection sticker - parking ticket

Different Inspection Situations

Purchase From Dealership

The dealer must have your vehicle inspected within 30 days of delivery.

Purchase Vehicle Out-of-State

Upon registering your vehicle in New York, you'll be given an inspection extension. You'll then have 10 days from the date of registering to have your vehicle inspected.

New NY Resident

New York will honor your inspection sticker if it was inspected in your former state. It will remain valid until it expires, or exactly one year from the day you first registered your vehicle in NY, whichever comes first.
