Inspection Requirements to Register Car
New York mandates an annual safety inspection and smog check. To have your vehicle inspected, visit any DMV-approved inspection station. These are located throughout the state. You can find inspection station listings on the NY DMV's Web site.Both inspections (safety and smog) will be handled at once. Have cash, check or credit card to pay the following fees:
- Inspection - $10
- Emissions - $11 or $27 if you live in the New York metropolitan area.
Penalties for Not Complying With NY Inspection Requirements
If you fail to comply with the state's inspection requirements, you will not be allowed to renew your car registration. In addition, you'll face the following possible fines:- Inspection sticker expired for 60 days or less - $25 to $50
- Inspection sticker expired for more than 60 days - $50 to $100
- No inspection sticker - $50 to $100
- Parked vehicle with no inspection sticker or an expired inspection sticker - parking ticket
Different Inspection Situations
Purchase From Dealership
The dealer must have your vehicle inspected within 30 days of delivery.
Purchase Vehicle Out-of-State
Upon registering your vehicle in New York, you'll be given an inspection extension. You'll then have 10 days from the date of registering to have your vehicle inspected.
New NY Resident
New York will honor your inspection sticker if it was inspected in your former state. It will remain valid until it expires, or exactly one year from the day you first registered your vehicle in NY, whichever comes first.
