Registration Renewal Card

Before it’s time to renew, the NC DMV will send you a car registration renewal card. This has all the information you need to register car again.

The renewal card also has your insurance policy number, registration number, license plate number, and address of record printed on it. You’ll need this information when you renew.

Inspection

You will also need to have a safety inspection and possibly emissions testing, depending on your county, before you proceed with the registration renewal. If you need an emissions and smog check, it will say so on your vehicle registration renewal card. You can also check the North Carolina DMV’s website to see if you live in one of the 48 counties requiring a smog test.
