Registration Renewal Card
Before it’s time to renew, the NC DMV will send you a car registration renewal card. This has all the information you need to register car again.
The renewal card also has your insurance policy number, registration number, license plate number, and address of record printed on it. You’ll need this information when you renew.
Inspection
You will also need to have a safety inspection and possibly emissions testing, depending on your county, before you proceed with the registration renewal. If you need an emissions and smog check, it will say so on your vehicle registration renewal card. You can also check the North Carolina DMV’s website to see if you live in one of the 48 counties requiring a smog test.
DMV Registration Fee
The car registration fee $28. Additional county fees may apply.
Online Renewal
To renew online, you need:
- Visa or MasterCard.
- Last five digits of the title number.
- License plate number.
- Insurance policy number.
- Current address on file with the NC DMV.
Renew by Mail
Request a renewal by mail by writing to:

Be sure to include a $1 postage fee (in addition to the registration fees) and allow at least one month before your registration expires.
Renew In Person
To renew in person:
- Make an appointment at a DMV office.
- Bring in your renewal notice and registration fee.
Lost Renewal Notice
You can either:
- Go into a DMV office with your information and renew.
- Register online, if you have all the information you need.
