Register Car Smog and Safety Inspection

You do not need to provide proof of passing a smog check (also known as emissions testing) for registration renewal or for first-time vehicle registration. However, if this is your vehicle's first car registration, you will need to have it inspected at any New Jersey emissions inspection facility within 14 days of its registration date.

If your vehicle passes, your vehicle's windshield will be affixed with an emissions/safety inspection sticker, serving as proof of compliance with the state's inspection requirements. If caught driving without an emissions/safety sticker by NJ law enforcement, you could face fines of up to $200, be sent to jail for 30 days and have your license revoked by the MVC.
