Emissions and Smog Check Requirements to Register Car

You do not need to provide proof of passing the emissions testing and safety inspection during vehicle registration. However, after registering your vehicle for the first time in New Jersey, you will have 14 days from the date of your car registration to have your vehicle inspected at a state emissions facility.

During the inspection, your vehicle will be checked for emissions and safety. If it passes, an emissions/inspection sticker will be affixed to your vehicle's windshield. This will serve as proof of compliance with the state's smog and safety requirements.

The penalties for driving without an emissions/safety sticker are stiff. You could be fined up to $200, tossed in jail for 30 days, and have your NJ drivers license revoked by the MVC.

Emissions Inspections facilities, state and private, are located throughout New Jersey. You can, if you so choose, make an online inspection appointment for state inspection facilities located in Cape May, Washington, Westfield, Salem, and Bridgeton.
