Yes. You must, during both first-time car registration and registration renewal, provide proof of car insurance.

NJ Car Insurance Requirements to Register Car

In New Jersey you must carry liability insurance, personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured motorist coverage. The minimum legal amounts are as follows for a standard insurance policy:

  • Injury/death for one person: $15,000
  • Injury/death for more than one person: $30,000
  • Property damage: $5,000
  • PIP: $15,000
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: $15,000
Your auto insurance company must provide you with a New Jersey Insurance Identification Card (one per vehicle). You must carry this with you at all times when driving. Failure to provide proof of auto insurance, when stopped, can lead to steep fines, arrest, community service, and loss of your drivers license.

When it comes to obtain vehicle registration or renew your current registration, you will need this card as well. It, among other things, contains your insurance identification number, which you'll need when renewing online or by phone.
