Illinois Inspection Requirements to Register Car

Your vehicle will need to pass an emissions inspection in order for you to renew your vehicle registration only if you reside in one of the following counties: Lake, DuPage, Cook, parts of Will, Madison, Monroe, St. Clair, McHenry, Kendall, and Kane.

If you live in a designated smog check area, your registration renewal form will alert you of this requirement. In addition, you'll receive a yellow smog test reminder from the Illinois EPA approximately four months prior to the expiration date of your IL car registration.

If you have questions about smog and emissions requirements, or need help in finding an emissions testing facility, call the Illinois EPA at (847) 758-3400 (Chicago area) or (800) 635-2380 (East St. Louis area).
