Pass Smog Check to Register Car

All emissions test facilities are located around two areas: Chicago and East Saint Louis.

To find the closest smog and emissions inspection facility near you:

  1. Go to the Illinois EPA Web site and click the Vehicle Emissions Testing tab, located on the right-side column. This will direct you to the landing page for the Vehicle Emissions Testing Program.
  2. Next, click the Test Stations Location tab, which will usher you to a page of the same name. Here you'll be able to locate a smog test facility by zip code. You'll also find a link for live station queue cameras, allowing you to monitor wait lines. Or, if you prefer, call (800) 635-2380 for estimated wait times. Saturday is the busiest test day.
When you arrive, be sure to have your test notice. And if your gas cap has a lock, bring your gas cap key.

Failed the Emissions Test?

If your vehicle fails the inspection, you will not be allowed to apply for registration renewal - or, at least not until you get your vehicle repaired and it passes inspection. If your IL vehicle registration expires before you get it retested, you will need to apply with the Secretary of State for a seven-day permit. This will serve as a temporary car registration certificate, allowing you to drive legally to the emissions test site.
