Absolutely. For most drivers, registration renewal is a simple process that can easily be accomplished online.

When you receive your renewal notice from PennDOT in the mail, check to see if you are due for a safety inspection or emissions testing. PennDOT maintains a network of repair shops and garages as certified inspectors, so check for the one closest to you. There is also a website for Drive Clean PA with detailed information about smog and emissions, and the smog check process in counties throughout Pennsylvania.

To renew your vehicle registration online:

  • Visit the PennDOT website
  • Fill in the first eight digits of your title number
  • Fill in your license plate number
  • Provide current auto insurance information, including effective dates
  • Fill in your drivers license number
You will also need a valid credit card—Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express—to pay the $36 fee. Once you've completed the online forms, print off a receipt and a temporary car registration valid for 15 days. Your permanent registration should arrive in the mail with plate stickers within 10 business days.

PA Exceptions

In some circumstances, you will have to register your car by mail or in person. If any of the following exceptions pertain to you, online renewal will not be permited by PennDOT:

  • Your contact information—name and address—is not on file with PennDOT
  • Your contact information on file is no longer accurate
  • You have more than six months remaining on your current registration
Certain types of vehicles and registration are also excluded from online renewal:

  • Dealer registration
  • Suspended registration
  • Taxi, limo, bus registrations
  • Disabled veteran status
  • Retired status
  • Biennial, apportioned, fleet vehicles
