PA Vehicle Safety Inspection

You are required to pass a vehicle safety inspection to register your car in Pennsylvania. The inspection sticker lasts for one year, and the month of expiration does not need to coincide with the expiration month of your registration renewal.

PennDOT maintains a network of local repair shops and garages authorized to perform the safety inspection. A technician at one of these locations will check your steering, tires, exhaust systems, brakes and a host of other vehicle components. If your vehicle passes the inspection, your paperwork will indicate that and allow you to register your vehicle or renew your registration. If you do not pass the inspection, repairs will be necessary to properly complete the PA registration process.

The fees vary from location to location.

PA Emissions Testing

PennDOT also requires annual emissions testing to register your car or renew a vehicle registration. You will need to pass the emissions test at the same time or before your annual safety inspection.

Drive Clean PA administers the PA smog and emissions program, and specific regulations vary from county to county. Visit its Web site for a list of approved testing locations, and call those locations directly for hours and pricing.

Register Your PA Vehicle

Many drivers handle their smog check and safety inspection at the same location and same time for convenience. Once your vehicle has cleared its annual checkups, visit PennDOT for the appropriate forms to register your vehicle. To renew a car registration online, after passing your inspections and testing, visit PennDOT's Web site. It's an easy process.
