What are the PA emissions or smog check requirements for vehicle registration? Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania Emissions Testing
PennDOT requires an annual safety inspection and emissions testing as part of the vehicle registration process. Many drivers accomplish both tests at one location to save time. You will need to demonstrate proof of having passed your smog test in order to begin your safety inspection, and you will need to pass your safety inspection for car registration or registration renewal. The specific tests performed at your smog check depend on the make, model and year of your vehicle, and where you live in PA. The emissions program in Pennsylvania is administered by Drive Clean PA, and each state county is subject to different testing requirements. A typical emissions test to register your car might include:
- On-board diagnostic check
- Tailpipe test
- Gas cap test
- Visual check for any vehicle tampering
You will receive a computer printout of your test results. Should your vehicle fail its emissions test, you have 30 days to make any necessary repairs and re-test your vehicle at the same location for no additional charge.
Emissions Exceptions
In certain situations, you may not need an emissions test to properly register your vehicle:- You have owned the vehicle for at least one year but driven it less than 5,000 miles
- The vehicle is new with less than 5,000 miles
In addition, certain specialty vehicles, such as street rod, classic or antique vehicles, may be exempt from a smog check.
