Do I need proof of auto insurance for PA vehicle registration? Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania Auto Insurance
You will need active, valid auto insurance to complete your vehicle registration in PA. Every car on the road is required to have continuous coverage, and any lapses in coverage will result in car registration suspension, and perhaps drivers license suspension.PennDOT demands that vehicle owners maintain liability insurance that demonstrates your financial responsibility for your vehicle. This type of car insurance covers property damage and personal injury you may cause in an accident.
When you register your car or process a registration renewal, PennDOT may send you a proof letter if it does not already have your insurance information on file. You should know that insurance companies are required by law to notify PennDOT of any cancellations, but not of new policies. If your insurance is cancelled and you start a new policy, notify PennDOT directly and make sure you maintain uninterrupted coverage.
To demonstrate proof of insurance to PennDOT, make a copy of your insurance ID card or a copy of the declarations page. Less common but acceptable forms of proof are available on the PennDOT website.
