Registration Renewal in Massachusetts

The RMV will mail you a registration renewal form (RMV-2) six to eight weeks prior to the expiration date of your vehicle registration.

If you don't receive a renewal notice, call (800) 858-3926, or (617) 351-4500 if your area code is 339, 617, 781, or 857. Keep in mind, however, that you will not receive a renewal notice if you have any unpaid excise tax bills, parking tickets, abandoned vehicle citations, or outstanding child support obligations or warrants.

The RMV gives you four options for renewing your car registration: in person, by phone, online, and by mail.

Renew in Person

Use this renewal option if your car registration is within a week of expiring.

Before visiting an RMV office, have your insurance agent stamp and sign your registration renewal notice (RMV-2) if it displays "Ins. Stamp Required."

When you arrive, have your registration renewal notice and cash or a check, debit, or credit card (Visa, Discover, MasterCard) to pay your registration fee.

You'll receive your new registration documents immediately.

Renew by Phone

You can use this option if:

  • Your registration renewal card is marked "Ins. Stamp Not Needed Active Policy on File."
  • You have a valid credit card (Visa, Discover, MasterCard, American Express).
Call either (800) 858-3926 or (617) 351-4500 if your area code is 339, 617, 718, or 857. You will be prompted by a phone operator on how to renew.

Your new registration documents should arrive in the mail in about 10 days.

Renew Online

You can use this option if:

  • Your registration renewal card is marked "Ins. Stamp Not Needed Active Policy on File."
  • You have a valid credit card (Visa, Discover, MasterCard, American Express).
  • You have a valid E-mail address.
  • You have your drivers license handy.
You can find the online registration renewal page, and instructions, on the RMV website.

Your new registration documents should arrive in the mail within 10 days.

Renew by Mail

You can only use this renewal method if:

  • All of the information on your renewal form is correct.
  • You insurance agent stamps and signs your renewal form if it is marked "Ins. Stamp Required."
  • You're free of outstanding obligations or unpaid tickets.
Mail your completed renewal form and check or money order to:

ATTN: Mail in Registration
Registry of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 55891
Boston, MA 02205-5891

Your new registration documents should arrive in the mail within about 10 days.

Registration Renewal Safety and Emissions Inspection Requirements

Your renewal notice will notify you if a smog check/safety inspection is required for your register car process. If so, you'll need to have your vehicle inspected at a registered smog and emissions testing center.
