Massachusetts Register Car Fees

During the vehicle registration process, you'll be required to pay the following registration fees depending on your vehicle situation:

  • Car registration: $50
  • Car registration renewal: $50
  • Car registration fee with vanity plates: $75
  • Car registration renewal fee with vanity plates: $75
  • Car registration fee with passenger reserve plates: $90
  • Car registration renewal fee with passenger reserve plates: $90
  • Car registration fee with year of manufacture plates: $45
  • Car registration renewal fee with year of manufacture plates: $45
  • Certificate of title fee: $75
The MA RMV accepts cash, checks, money orders, and debit and credit cards (Discover, American Express, Visa, MasterCard) as fee payment.

NOTE: Fees for special plates vary. For instance, a Boston Red Sox plate, along with registration, costs $90, while a Cape & Islands license plate totals out at $100.

MA Emissions Testing and Safety Inspection Requirements

In addition to car registration, your vehicle must also pass an annual smog check/safety inspection. You must provide a valid registration certificate before the smog/emissions and safety inspection, or you will be denied.
