Emissions Testing for the MA Register Car Process

After your car's initial vehicle registration with the RMV, you'll have seven days from the registration date to have your car inspected. Otherwise, you do not have to provide proof of passing a smog check or safety inspection during the registration process, including registration renewal.

Conversely, you must provide proof of car registration to have your vehicle inspected for safety and smog emissions. You must present it to a safety inspection attendant, prior to the inspection. If do not have a valid Massachusetts registration certificate, the inspection attendant will cancel the emissions test.

If you get caught driving without a valid inspection sticker, you will be cited for driving an unsafe vehicle and possibly be saddled with an insurance surcharge.
