MA Car Insurance Requirements to Register Car

Yes, you must provide proof of auto insurance during vehicle registration.

The RMV employs stringent requirements for providing proof. Unlike most states that require an insurance identification card during the car registration process, Massachusetts requires having your insurance agent stamp and sign your Application for Registration and Title (RMV-1). This applies to new and used cars, regardless if the car was bought from a dealer or a private individual.

During registration renewal, you'll be instructed on your renewal notice if the RMV has your auto insurance information on file, or if an insurance stamp and signature from your insurance agent is required.

Massachusetts Auto Insurance Coverage

To comply with the state's car insurance laws, you must carry the following minimum amounts of coverage:

  • $20,000 per person injured in any one accident.
  • $40,000 for all persons injured in any one accident.
  • $5,000 for property damage.
  • $8,000 for personal injury protection (PIP).
  • $20,000 for injury caused by an uninsured motorist.
Keep in mind these are minimum amounts. Depending on your vehicle(s) and/or driving situation, you have the option for protecting yourself with more substantial amounts of insurance protection.
