Locating MA Smog and Safety Inspection Facilities

You have seven days after you complete your vehicle’s initial (read: very first) register car process in Massachusetts to have it inspected. After that, a smog check and safety inspection is required annually. To comply, you must have your vehicle inspected at a state-approved inspection station.

There are almost 1,500 locations scattered across MA. For help in finding one close to you, call (866) 941-6277. Some stations may allow you to make an appointment; otherwise, it's first-come-first serve.

To avoid the longest lines, have your vehicle inspected during the first-half of the month.

Massachusetts Emissions Testing Requirements

When you first arrive, an inspection attendant will visually inspect your vehicle, looking for potential dangers like a leaking gas line. If your vehicle is deemed safe, you'll then need to present the attendant with your car's vehicle registration. If your car registration is expired the inspection will be immediately terminated. You'll then be required to undergo registration renewal with the RMV before you can try again.

If your Massachusetts vehicle registration is valid, the attendant will proceed with the safety and emissions inspection. You'll need to have payment to cover the state's $29 inspection fee.

If your vehicle passes, a valid inspection sticker will be affixed to the windshield. If it fails, you'll be given 60 days to have the car repaired and successfully re-tested.
