What if I did not receive a MA registration renewal notice? Massachusetts
Register Car and Registration Renewal in MA
The RMV will mail you a registration renewal notice (RMV-2) approximately six to eight weeks before the expiration date of your current car registration. If you do not receive your notice, call either (800) 858-3926, or (617) 351-4500 if your area code is 339, 617, 781, or 857 to confirm your mailing address.Keep in mind that you will not be sent a vehicle registration renewal notice if you have any unpaid parking tickets, excise tax bills, abandoned vehicle citations, or outstanding child support obligations or warrants.
If you are free of tickets, citations, and other financial obligations and the RMV has your correct address on file, you'll need to visit your insurance agent to obtain an Application to Renew (RMV-3). After completing, have your insurance agent sign and stamp the application before submitting.
Massachusetts Emissions Testing
You do not need to provide proof of passing a smog check during registration renewal. You will, however, be required to provide proof of vehicle registration for your safety inspection.Your vehicle must pass an annual smog and emissions test and safety inspection. If caught driving without a valid inspection sticker affixed to your vehicle's windshield, you will be issued a citation and face a possible insurance surcharge.
Your car must be tested at a state-improved inspection center. When you arrive, be sure to have your registration certificate and payment to cover the state's $29 inspection fee.
