Obtaining a Duplicate Vehicle Registration in Massachusetts

If your MA register car documentation goes missing, you have four options for applying for a duplicate registration: in person, by phone, online, and by mail.

In Person


Visit your local RMV office and complete a Universal Form. You'll need to provide:

  • Proper identification.
  • Cash or a check or money order to cover the $25 duplicate car registration fee.
You'll receive your duplicate car registration immediately.

By Phone


Call either (800) 858-3926 or (617) 351-4500 if your area code is 617, 781, 857, or 339. When calling, you'll need:

  • Your license plate number.
  • A valid credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) to cover the $25 duplicate vehicle registration fee.
Your replacement vehicle registration should arrive in the mail within about 10 days.

You can use this option only if you own one of the following license plates:

If you qualify, you can find the online application on the RMV website. You'll need a valid credit card (Discover, MasterCard, Visa) to pay the $25 duplicate car registration fee.

Expect your duplicate registration certificate to arrive in the mail within about 10 days.

By Mail


You must compose a written request that includes the year, make and model of your car, as well as the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the license plate number. Send this, along with a check or money order for $25, to:

Your replacement should be mailed within 10 days.
