Obtaining a Duplicate Vehicle Registration in Massachusetts
If your MA register car documentation goes missing, you have four options for applying for a duplicate registration: in person, by phone, online, and by mail.In Person
Visit your local RMV office and complete a Universal Form. You'll need to provide:
- Proper identification.
- Cash or a check or money order to cover the $25 duplicate car registration fee.
By Phone
Call either (800) 858-3926 or (617) 351-4500 if your area code is 617, 781, 857, or 339. When calling, you'll need:
- Your license plate number.
- A valid credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) to cover the $25 duplicate vehicle registration fee.
Online
You can use this option only if you own one of the following license plates:
- Standard Passenger
- Cape Cod & Islands
- Reserve
- Ham Operator
- Vanity
- Antique
- Motorcycle
- Motorcycle Reserve
- Motorcycle Vanity
- Motorcycle Veteran
- Handicap
- Antique
- Olympic Spirit
- Veteran
- Environmental Trust
- Year of Manufacture
- Purple Heart
- Basketball Hall of Fame
Expect your duplicate registration certificate to arrive in the mail within about 10 days.
By Mail
You must compose a written request that includes the year, make and model of your car, as well as the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the license plate number. Send this, along with a check or money order for $25, to:

Your replacement should be mailed within 10 days.
