In the event of a repo, how does the new owner handle vehicle registration?
Repos and Vehicle Registration
In most cases you'll find that once a vehicle has been repossessed, the lienholder will then be required to obtain a new title for the repo. Once this has been accomplished, the lienholder can then legally resell the repossession. If you're the buyer of this seized car, you'll then follow the same titling and car registration procedures as you would with any new car purchase. Before finalizing the buy, however, double-check that the title is actually in the lienholder's name and not the person who the car was repossessed from. With legitimate title in hand, you'll then be proceed with vehicle registration. If you're unfamiliar with the car registration requirements in your state, and/or if you have questions about buying a repossessed vehicle, contact your local DMV. Each DMV governs differently.
