Online Registration Renewal

The majority of states now offer online registration renewal. It's a convenient option for updating tabs and license plates. But even though the option is offered, it does not guarantee eligibility. For instance, drivers in New York cannot renew online if they recently moved and failed to notify the DMV. Maryland disallows use if the driver has any outstanding tickets. And most states won't allow drivers to update their vehicle registration online if applying for a new style of license plate.

Consider renewing in-person if your vehicle registration is a day or two from expiring. You'll receive your new registration immediately. Whereas if you renew online you'll risk having your current registration expire while waiting for your new certificate to arrive in the mail. And you will be ticketed if stopped driving with an expired registration.
